Did you know there’s more to me than just goats?
I know, I know. Shocker, right?
If you follow me on my YouTube channel, you’re probably used to seeing me milk goats and laugh about garden failures. But in my spare time I’m actually really passionate about running my business and creating passive income, which includes writing on this blog here and selling products I love, including essential oils!
I became interested in essential oils back in 2012 when I attended a class in my town and the instructor applied an oil on my sciatic nerve that relieved the pain almost instantly.
I was definitely sold on the efficacy of oils, but I NEVER, and I mean NEVER thought about teaching others about how to use them. I just simply signed up with a wholesale account, and purchased oils every couple months or so. There was no obligation for me to sell, and there was no obligation to purchase a certain amount of products each month. So I used my time to learn about how to use essential oils for natural solutions in my home.
Starting my Essential Oils Business
Fast forward 2 years and I was approached by a fellow blogger with the idea that I could teach & sell essential oil online. By then I was a PRO at using oils for the family & farm, and I felt that my nursing background gave me plenty of knowledge about how the body works and how to choose the right essential oil for the health concern.
As a blogger with a fair amount of traffic, I get requests every day to review this or that product. Although I’ve read from blogging articles that I can charge anywhere from $1000 on up to review a product, most of the time I’ve declined the offers.
Why?
There just isn’t a product I can put my name behind. As much as I’d love to get paid to promote this “cleanse”, or that “magical supplement,” if I don’t use it myself and if I don’t feel it helps make my family healthier, then I don’t want to encourage others to purchase it.
After 6+ years of using these high-quality doTERRA essential oils, and feeling secure in their ethics & company practices, I felt safe enough to share about them online.
Putting my name behind essential oils is something I can feel 100% comfortable about! On top of that, being able to do something I love and creating passive income is the best feeling in the world! In 2017 we paid off our house and became 100% debt-free.
How I’ve built my team to over 11,000+ members.
Right away, I started working on my ability to teach about oils & do what is commonly called “closing a class”, which is a fancy sales term for “selling at the end of a teaching moment”.
I studied up on the best way to teach about oils to a newbie and practiced on family & friends. I enrolled a few people I felt comfortable with and then felt ready to start to teach online.
I recorded myself teaching about essential oils, and reached out to my followers on my email list & social media accounts to see who was interested. My main goal was to encourage people to enroll as a member. They could either pay the initial membership fee of $35 or purchase an oil starter kit and the membership fee was waived.
Slowly people started to trickle in, and as my members underneath me grew, so did my income. doTERRA pays the Wellness Advocate (me) both for new members purchases as well as any members’ future repurchases as long as they are still under my team.
The more I taught & researched essential oils, the more I learned. If there’s anything I’ve learned with essential oils, it’s that there are A LOT of uses for them, and sometimes the information can be overwhelming. That’s where I came in. I knew that if I wanted to start an essential oil business, I’d better know my stuff, and take care of EVERY SINGLE PERSON who signs up under me.
So, in addition to teaching beginners about essential oils and showing them where to get started with their first purchase, I created an entire private website full of information on how to use their oils for health concerns, pets, first aid, green cleaning, homemade body products, and more! Anybody who is on my team has access to this so they can also present it to their new members.
And that brings me to the second part of building my essential oil business.
Teaching my Team how to Sell Essential Oils
Once I mastered the ability to enroll people as members under me, it was time to teach others how to grow their businesses, too.
In doTERRA, about 80% of the people you sell oils to are there ONLY to purchase oils. This is an awesome thing because as you continually support them, they’ll continually use and purchase essential oils. But because you can’t build a large team on your members alone, you’ll need to enroll people who are interested in teaching others about oils, too!
I first surveyed my team and found people who had been using oils for a while and were passionate about teaching others. Next, I worked on actively recruiting. I found all sorts of people in my search from bloggers to health coaches to nurses. Not all of them ended up loving the business, but a few of them did, and as their teams grew, so did my overall team. And that built my passive income even more!
From years of doing this business, I’ve narrowed down my main training on how to build essential oil business in THREE simple parts:
- In the beginning, you have to get good at teaching others about oils. I start training somebody by having them download an easy-to-read pamphlet they can pass out to family & friends, and giving them simple scripts for teaching people about the top 10 essential oils and how they solve hundreds of different health concerns. Once you enroll a few people you’re comfortable with, you’ll be well on your way to growing your team!
- Next, you have to make sure to support your members. I let you add YOUR new members to my facebook group, give them access to my private training site, and I even send YOUR new members a goody bag in the mail. My main goal is to take care of the initial beginner training of using their oils so you can be there for the personal checking in.
- Finally, I have a course that carefully lays out all the aspects of strategically growing a business. For people who are really looking to grow a passive income, this is GOLD! I give you the heads up on everything you need to know to grow your team fast and effectively!
Because my team is full of people who build online & locally, I also offer a lot of different types of training & resources depending on where you want to take your business. Working at a hospital? Can you grow an essential oil business, too?
I get emails daily from people asking if I think they have what it takes to grow an essential oil business like I did. The truth is that ANYONE can do this, but very FEW actually have the ambition and drive to see it through. My question for you is, do you want to create a passive income? Are you willing to sacrifice evenings & weekends to get on your computer and work? Do you understand the concept of putting time in NOW to be able to create a passive income for the FUTURE?
I think the most important skill that blogging has taught me is that it is 1000% worth my time to work on building something that will pay myself back in the future.
